Having spent so much time traveling between my home in California and school in Rhode Island, I’ve wound up spending entire days in airports. With my Airport Interiors collection, I decided to draw attention to these often overlooked spaces. This collection consists of seventeen designs inspired by the bustling energy, bold signage, and runway lighting ubiquitous in airports. Each design hones in on a specific object and/or space -- its material chosen carefully to reflect the attention to detail within an airport. Color, material, and structure lie at the center of this collection.
Using a 24 harness dobby loom, I created technical fabrics suitable for application in airport interiors. Delving into visual and technical qualities within airplanes and airports, I decided to weave with materials such as 3M™ Scotchlite™ Reflective Material, stainless steel coated with a thermoplastic polymer, opalescent metallic yarn, and vinyl. As a finishing process, several woven fabrics have been heat pressed and/or hand-dyed using acid or MX dyes. The woven fabrics serve not only as visual entertainment, but also as functional textiles for airport interiors.
